Exurb Loves: Escentials

July 21, 2010 By: Sofie Sausser Category: Exurb Loves...

Tucked away in the Albertsons shopping center in Calabasas (practically Agoura) is a little shop called Escentials. And boy is it filled with essentials! They have everything you need to stay glamorous and fresh.

The owner, Penny Hakian, is a stylist who worked in the movie business and has done a great job stocking hair and beauty products that are not available in mall stores. You can stop by and Penny will advise you on the best products that will suit your individual needs. She is so knowledgable about all things skincare!

I had the chance to talk to Jenny Patrick, a make up artist and stylist who works at Escentials. Customers stop in for a quick make over from Jenny and the latest scoop on all the new products. One of their new hot products is Revitalash. It looks like mascara but has ingredients that help your eyelashes grow longer. They offer it to their customers at a great price and it flies out the door. Jenny also recommends One cream. It is a 10 in 1 multi treatment facial cream that simplifies your beauty routine with this One product that does it all.

Escentials is the “go to” store for great unusual gift items. They have an amazing perfume selection with a perfume bar to concoct your own custom scent. So much fun! They have tons of cool jewelry made by local artists, beautiful candles and a children’s section. You can find a gift for anyone on your list, including men. The complimentary gift wrapping is adorable. They have a fabulous esthetician available as well. Even Brittany Spears has stopped in for the hard to find beauty items!

Out Here: The Great Cupcake Taste-Off!

April 07, 2010 By: Victoria Clayton Category: Out Here, food&

Sometimes Exurb engages in really important business. For example, our recent cupcake taste-off. Now that shops specializing in fancy cupcakes have seeped all the way out here, we felt obligated to offer our tasting services to you. We invited about 30 friends in to sample three cupcakes from the pros and one homemade. Of course, nobody knew which cupcake came from which source. The competition was fierce. Drumroll please…You may think we fixed this for shock value, but I swear we didn’t. The homemade cupcake made by the lovely Andie Sausser, an Agoura High student, won! Sweet Arleen’s in Westlake Village came in second, but I have to say none of them was terrible.

So, there, we not only answered the all-important issue of which cupcake out here is the best, but we also answered this burning question: Is it really worth it to pay $3 for a cupcake?  I guess it’s not if you can bake like Andie.

Exurb Loves: Blue Table in Agoura

March 15, 2010 By: Sofie Sausser Category: Exurb Loves..., food&

A friend of mine gave me the heads up about the new Blue Table that opened in the Agoura Whizin’s Center next to the Canyon Club. I love the Blue Table in Calabasas. Whenever we go on a picnic or to the Hollywood Bowl, we order  from there.  So the Exurb crew met in Agoura for lunch.  It is a family owned business, mom and  dad, (Jim and Ellen) opened the Calabasas location when their kids moved out of the house and they needed someone to cook for. After 5 years of success, daughter and son-in-law (Gina and Stefano) opened the Agoura location. Their idea was a good one. Cook fresh, home cooked food, with a “Welcome to my home” feel. They have gourmet soups, salads, sandwiches, cheeses, cookies and gelato. My favorite is the Ellen’s Special Panini, turkey, ham, goat cheese, fig-onion jam and garlic aioli. The people who work there, Sabrina, John, Matt and Ritchie are so friendly, too! Thanks Blue Table!

Out Here…Radioactive Contamination in the West Valley

October 01, 2009 By: Debbie Miller Category: Out Here

PSR-Nuclear_Field_Laboratory_article

Many of our local community members have been working hard to understand the issues regarding the radioactive contamination in the hills in the West San Fernando Valley. If you aren’t aware of this situation then look at this video or go onto the site called www.acmela.org to learn more.
According to Wikipedia, The Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) is a once prolific rocket and nuclear reactor test facility located 30 miles (48 km) north of downtown Los Angeles, California. SSFL continues to operate today, serving as a research facility for The Boeing Company. The first commercial nuclear-power producing reactor (the Sodium Reactor Experiment) inside the United States was built at SSFL. The SRE came online in April 1957, and began feeding electricity to the grid on July 12, 1957. The reactor powered over 1,100 homes in the Moorpark area of California for a short period of time. Today, all nuclear research and most rocket testing has been halted.
Most people agree that regardless of whether their own community is affected (the worst affected areas are Chatsworth, Bell Canyon, Calabasas, and Simi Valley with Oak Park and Agoura Hills on the other side), the contamination needs to be cleaned up so the surrounding water, air and soil aren’t polluted with toxins.  In 2007 then-Senator Khuel and Assemblywoman Julia Brownley worked hard to pass a law called SB990 which mandates clean up, but there is a problem with the what has happened since 2007.
The “polluters” which are Boeing, NASA and the Department of Energy, were supposed to sign a consent order to comply with this law.  Boeing has refused to partake in it and the other two have written in clauses to this legal document that can get them out of cleaning it up.
Want to do something to help? The public comment period ends this Friday, October 2. What does this mean?  It means that we the public need to email this guy Rick Brausch (see below) who works for the Department of Toxic Substance Control (DTSC) by Friday to speak up.
If there isn’t a public outcry to Rick to get the consent order redone, then he will assume that the public is OK with the current consent order and the law will not be worth anything and the contaminated site will not get cleaned up as it should. read the order here
Community members are urging residents of our area to help by sending an email to Rick Brausch at the DTSC.  If you would like to get your comments heard and help make the clean up a reality, please cut and paste and modify with your own name and personal comments and send the e-mail by Friday.
People should send an email like the following to Rick Brausch at RBrausch@dtsc.ca.gov (RBrausch AT dtsc.ca.gov) by Oct. 2 if possible:

Mr. Rick Brausch
California Dept. of Toxic Substances
P.O. Box 806
Sacramento, CA  95823-0806

Dear Mr. Brausch,

We write regarding the cleanup of the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL), one of the most contaminated sites in California, polluted both by radioactive and chemically toxic materials, the legacy of spills and releases from numerous nuclear reactors and thousands of rocket tests.

We are concerned that the draft cleanup Order with the Dept. of Energy and NASA, two of the parties responsible for the contamination at SSFL, has no enforceable commitments by them to comply with SB990, the state’s cleanup law for the site.

We are troubled that in fact the Order would guarantee them the right to go to court to block SB990.

And we are disturbed about other portions of the draft Order that would undermine SB990 and let most of the contamination at the site remain in place, posing a continuing risk to neighboring communities.

We urge you to rewrite the Order so that it fully complies with SB990 and assures a thorough and rigorous cleanup of this contaminated nuclear and rocket testing facility.

Sincerely,

Still love the 70′s and 80′s?  We’ll take you back with the best songs from the decades.

With the Lakes Outdoor Skating Rink coming soon (November 2009 – Jan. 2010) I am thinking of signing up my 5 year old daughter for ice skating lessons.  I signed up my son 3 years ago (he was 6) in February 2006 and it helped him tremendously.  He went from crashing down on his knees about 50 times an hour at the Lakes, to rarely falling down.   Last winter my daughter loved being on the ice, but I had to hold her and that was hard on my back. TIP: Last winter I did see one family with 2 kids (ages 4-6?) wearing double-blade skates!  Brilliant!  The children skated completely independently and comfortably.  (I wanted to order a pair last year and never got around to it.)

The Conejo Recreation and Park District & The Thousand Oaks Kiwanis Club presents
Fishing Frenzy
Saturday, August 1, 2009, 10am – 1pm

Admission, $5.00 per child; under 2 years can participate in the practice ponds for no charge.
Conejo Creek North Park, 1379 E. Janss Road (behind the T.O. Library)

Hundreds of magnetic fish will be released into the creek for children to try to catch with a magnetic pole.
Fill up your pail with fish and turn them in for a fun prize.
Kids will also have a chance to participate in fun fish crafts, games, and explore Captain Carl’s Mobile Tidepool.
Refreshments will be sold for a nominal fee. For additional information call the Thousand Oaks Community Center at (805) 381-2793.

I took my kids to this last year and we enjoyed it.  Wear sunscreen and bring hats.  Get there early to get a fishing pole.  Families who arrived late were unable to get a fishing pole.  I was so impressed with the T.O. Kiwanis Club who were volunteering to be there to help out.  It was crowded, but it seemed most children were able to find a spot on the man-made creek.

This place is on the right side of the road (look for the sign) and a little tricky to find the first time.  My 9-year-old son has long outgrown these musical performances, but I would like to take my 5-year-old daughter this summer to some of these shows, especially the funny Creative Playground shows.

Laughter and Luxury: Comedy of the Last Great Recession

The Four Marx Brothers in Monkey Business (Vaudeville, Early Sound, Surrealism and the Marx Brothers)
Wednesday, August 5, 1pm

Salvador Dali once declared the Marx Brothers were “surrealists working in Hollywood.”  Their comedy sketches jumped from one gag to another with little or no plot, in an almost dream-like manner that fascinated audiences.  In this screening, we will examine the comedy trio’s style, their roots in vaudeville, and the social commentary in their films.
77 min., B&W, 1931

My Man Godfrey (Carol Lombard & William Powell) (Screwball Comedy & Class conflict)
Thursday, August 6, 1pm

The screwball comedy was a genre linked to the Great Depression culture of the 1930s.  Plots focused on making fun of the absent-minded upper class.  In this film, star William Powell works as a butler for a wealthy family and spends his days both mocking and enjoying his employers.  This screening will examine the class conflict that arose during an era of extreme proverty.

Share a laugh and a short, free lecture with NYU cinema studies student and Thousand Oaks High School graduate, Monica Sandler, as she looks at two comedy classics that served as a form of escapism in a rough time.  Many films of the 1930s were more than pure escapism — they discussed societal issues and difficulties, all in a highly entertaining package.  Ms. Sandler will share insights into the films and how they reflect the culture of the ‘30s and, maybe, even today

Common Sense Media says Monkey Business would be fine for ages 5 and up.  If we are in the library that day, I * might * swing by the room and see if my kids have any interest.  These movies are great (and I would love to hear the commentary) but I will wait a few years to show them My Man Godfrey.
