Sometimes you just say “OMG! This is the best thing I’ve ever tasted!”
There were a few moments like that this weekend. We are going to talk about them all!!
First, nothing better than GOOD sushi. Saturday at Cho Cho San in Thousand Oaks we feasted on 911 rolls and their AMAZING new eel/avocado/mascarpone cheese sushi! It didn’t have a name, but I could think of a good one…maybe the Sally Sushi? (ala Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally…) ya…it was THAT good.
The picture does not do it justice, but believe me, it was goooooooooood.
Another sinful treat we love are onion rings. The ones at Zoey’s Cafe in Ventura are the best! GOOD onion rings hardly exist, and we’ve tested a LOT through the years. Zoey’s surpassed every other ring out there! And we were there for the music, not the food!
And kudos to The Clearman’s Village in San Gabriel for redoing The Boat (Clearman’s Galley) in style with a taste of the place that make Sunday late lunches great for everyone. Though this is a trek for us Out Here, it is a great stop if you are traveling toward Pasadena or further on the 210. We’ve been going to The Boat for years, and my husband’s family before that. Two years ago Clearman’s Village “sold out” a bit and closed The Boat while a Kohl’s and other stores were built in it’s place. But it’s back! The food is as good as ever. They are known for their chili, burgers, salads (the blue cheese salad is great, and the red cabbage unique and flavorful!) It’s a great place to watch a game (or 5…they have big screens EVERYWHERE). Go hungry, because portions are big, and you’ll want at least two of their cheese bread slices.
Tucked away in the Albertsons shopping center in Calabasas (practically Agoura) is a little shop called Escentials. And boy is it filled with essentials! They have everything you need to stay glamorous and fresh.
The owner, Penny Hakian, is a stylist who worked in the movie business and has done a great job stocking hair and beauty products that are not available in mall stores. You can stop by and Penny will advise you on the best products that will suit your individual needs. She is so knowledgable about all things skincare!
I had the chance to talk to Jenny Patrick, a make up artist and stylist who works at Escentials. Customers stop in for a quick make over from Jenny and the latest scoop on all the new products. One of their new hot products is Revitalash. It looks like mascara but has ingredients that help your eyelashes grow longer. They offer it to their customers at a great price and it flies out the door. Jenny also recommends One cream. It is a 10 in 1 multi treatment facial cream that simplifies your beauty routine with this One product that does it all.
Escentials is the “go to” store for great unusual gift items. They have an amazing perfume selection with a perfume bar to concoct your own custom scent. So much fun! They have tons of cool jewelry made by local artists, beautiful candles and a children’s section. You can find a gift for anyone on your list, including men. The complimentary gift wrapping is adorable. They have a fabulous esthetician available as well. Even Brittany Spears has stopped in for the hard to find beauty items!

You probably thought we were going to say we loved Amgen this week because of the whole bike tour thing…unfortunately, we’re still reeling from those neighbors and friends who had to move away from the area a year+ ago when they lost their nice Amgen jobs. And now that we know Exurb will never be Amgen’s Exurb, let’s get on to really good things…the Kid’s Adventure Garden! We don’t love that it’s only open Sundays from 11am-3pm, but that’s okay. It’s entirely volunteer-run and it’s free. The kids will love the tree house, bed made from plants, the bee hive, dragon and more. There are also hiking trails adjacent (besides the lovely Conejo Valley Botanic Garden and the Conejo Community Park at Dover&Hendrix). You can also have birthday parties at the Kid’s Adventure Garden.
Directions to the Kid’s Adventure Garden:
Exit the 101 Freeway at Lynn Road. Go north .7 mile to Gainsborough Road. Turn right and proceed ½ mile to the access drive on the right at 350 W. Gainsborough Road at Jeaunine Dr.
The headquarters and Kids’ Adventure Garden are across from the parking lot.
The Garden is also accessible from the Conejo Community Park (Hendrix Ave. at Dover Ave. in Thousand Oaks).
Open Sundays 11am-3pm. Available other hours for private parties.
If you haven’t googled today, get to it! It’s someone’s anniversary today…and no one does it better than google.
