About Us
A Couple of Exurb Frequently Asked Questions
Are you a magazine or a website or a blog?
We call Exurb a magazine because that’s just how we think of it. As you can see, though, we’re sort of a website/blog too. The truth is, we’re a work in progress. Don’t question, just enjoy.
So far, here are some blogs/columns you’ll likely see regularly:
Exurb Loves–a random selection of people, places and things we, you guessed it, LOVE.
Animal Sense– Maryann Hammers on pets and other creatures.
Wine Picks- Greg Clarke’s wine selections
Yoga Parent– yogic parenting post
Sex on the Brain– Brian Alexander’s blog on his MSNBC Sexploration column
Out Here– Exurbanites-in-chief (our contributors) on exurban Los Angeles living.
Simply Sofie- Sofie Sausser on stylish, enviro-friendly stuff
Debbie Does Music- Debbie Miller on live local music
Fresh Faith — Pastor Brad Johnson on spirituality
What’s with the name Exurb?
The good people at the Brookings Institute define “exurb” this way: exurban census tracts send at least 20 percent of their workers to urbanized areas in large metropolitan areas.
For our purposes, it’s a a state of mind (and, okay, place). A lot of people say a lot of things about the exurbs and much of it isn’t so flattering. We’re in the LA/Ventura County area and we care about the environment, education, city planning, music, good food, wine, books and more. If you live outside of a major city and you care about these issues, you’re here too.
