Exurb magazine is a collection of independent voices. We’ve  come together to post interviews, blogs and short articles on subjects that appeal to exurbanites (people who live in the far-flung suburbs of a major city). We’re outside of Los Angeles, but much of our content can be enjoyed by anyone. We cover books, food, parenting, wine, local treasures, environmental issues, education, eco style and much more.

Exurb magazine was founded in May 2009 and is moderated primarily by exurbanites-in-charge Victoria Clayton, Debbie Miller and Sofie Sausser. We have a range of contributors, including professional writers, journalists, artists and stay-at-home parents. Each contributor is responsible for the content, grammar, spelling, etc. of his or her post. Writer Anne Lamott has said perfectionism is the voice of the oppressor. In the interest of not being oppressive, we are not perfect!

What’s with the name Exurb?

The good people at the Brookings Institute define “exurb” this way: exurban census tracts send at least 20 percent of their workers to urbanized areas in large metropolitan areas.For our purposes, it’s a a state of mind (and, okay, place).

Exurb aims to extoll the virtues of creative, aware and open-minded exurbanites and also open discussion on some of the major and real issues that exist in suburban/exurban living.
