Out Here (health care reform and bitten off fingers)

Several months ago I interviewed people who were fighting against Home Depot opening another store out here. I still haven’t published the interview but it’s coming. Two of the main organizers/activists were actually imported from Sunland/Tujunga to show us how to do it. I met them at the community clubhouse in my neighborhood, where they happened to be  holding a meeting. Afterward I spoke with them in front of the clubhouse. One of them looked out at the tidy homes and lawns and said, “I don’t know if we’re going to win here. The people are different. In Sunland we love a fight. Here, maybe you have it too good.” True, there are no billboards allowed on our streets. One may say that there is a certain lack of grittiness. And, true, we may be just close enough to the ocean that the negative ions chill us out. But, look, we are not completely apathetic! For instance, did you hear what happened at a recent  health care reform rally in Thousand Oaks? According to a KTLA news report, a protestor opposed to reform hit someone who was pro-reform. The battle resulted in a finger being bitten off.  I just hope the guy had insurance because an emergency room visit to Los Robles is at least a couple thousand.

What do you think? Are you so ticked about health care reform that you could bite off a finger? No? What about an ear?
