Exurb Loves: FarmerFreshToYou.Net
I previously blogged about community supported agriculture and also that I was signing up for a service that delivers locally grown, organic produce to homes or businesses. This is the follow up. No, I don’t like the service at all. I LOVE IT! I’ve told so many people about my farmerfreshtoyou.net deliveries that I’m actually sick of talking about it (so now I’m writing).
Carol and Lisette, two women from Camarillo, lost their jobs last year and decided to launch this business. The inspiration came after Lisette visited her son in London and saw a similar delivery service. Now FarmerFreshToYou.net has more than 100 customers (I think I’m personally responsible for at least a handful!).
We order the small box weekly, which is $32. Check out the photo and see how much produce you get! We also sometimes order the cage-free, hormone-free eggs (around $5). I’ve found that if you stick to the weekly deliveries you’ll get on a schedule and your produce will be just about gone when a new delivery comes. You obviously have to like fruits and vegetables and like to cook, which my family does. Around July 4th Carol delivered perhaps the most delicious melon my husband and I have ever tasted in our lives. My almost-6-year-old and his friends have even commented about how tasty the grapes, oranges and other fruits are! The produce has, in fact, bumped up every recipe I cook. I’m continually amazed by what a difference it makes to use the freshest, in-season produce available. Furthermore, it has drastically cut down on the number of trips I make to the grocery stores. I haven’t tallied all the numbers yet, but I have a feeling the delivery is actually saving us money not only because we’re not shopping as often but also because we’re not eating out as often. When you have produce this good, you want to use it.
Each week, Carol and Lisette send out an email detailing the produce that will be available. Customers place an order from the website. There’s space there to make special requests. If you really hate something, you can request a substitution. One of my friends has done this occasionally and she says it usually works but sometimes the request seems to be disregarded. If it’s extremely important that you don’t get a particular item, she recommends just calling them. I’ve found that they are always available via the numbers listed on their website. You can even call them to ask what to do with a certain vegetable, which I’ve done before! Each delivery also comes with a lemon, garlic and an herb. They usually also throw in some recipes.
FarmerFreshToYou.net delivers anywhere along the 101 freeway in the San Fernando Valley and anywhere in the Conejo Valley, Camarillo, etc. If you’re not around here, find something similar near you.
I’ve just re-read what I’ve written and I know it sounds a bit like I’ve written an advertisement. I promise you I’m not on the dole! I just really like this service, in case you can’t tell.
p.s.
Don’t know what to do with your veggies? Try the website www.supercook.com. You can enter what you have and a bunch of recipes for those ingredients come up. With farmerfreshtoyou.net veggies and supercook.com recipes I’ve made Iranian eggplant salad, asparagus soup and a bunch of other easy, healthy dishes.

What a GREAT IDEA!!!! I eat only organic and it is difficult to find a solid stock of organic produce in one store, driving and leaving a huge carbon footprint all over town all the way. You solved a problem that I thought I had to live with. I grow my little organic veggie patch, but still run into blocks of either having almost ready ripe something or nothing at all. This is great!!!!!
